A Design Rooted in Ritual: VIGT x Blue Lagoon Skincare

Introducing a limited-edition Mirrored Mask Stand handcrafted in Iceland to honor the Silica Mud Mask’s 30th anniversary.

To mark the 30th anniversary of our iconic Silica Mud Mask, Blue Lagoon Skincare partnered with VIGT—an Icelandic design studio founded by four women and rooted in the volcanic landscape of Grindavík. The result is a limited-editionMirrored Mask Stand made of hand-finished mahogany: a beautifully functional object designed to hold your mask, mirror, or treasured essentials. Crafted just minutes from the Blue Lagoon, this collaboration reflects a shared devotion to natural materials, thoughtful design, and the power of everyday rituals.

Can you tell us a bit about how VIGT began and what inspired you to work together as a family?

VIGT was founded by four women—a mother and three daughters—each with a background in design and a love for craftsmanship. Our family workshop in Grindavík has been at the heart of our lives for as long as we can remember. It was originally established by our grandfather, father, and uncle in 1979, and it’s where we spent our childhood—surrounded by tools, timber, and the quiet rhythm of making.

Sundays were often spent driving through construction sites, studying cranes and concrete forms. It may sound unusual, but those early experiences shaped our eye and sensibility. Eventually, it felt only natural to come together and build something of our own.

In 2013, VIGT was born—a creation rooted in what came before.

The name comes from the old harbor weigh-house in Grindavík where we first set up our studio. Vigt stands for balance, presence, and strength—still the philosophy behind everything we make.

Working together as a family allows for an unspoken understanding—a shared language rooted in history, trust, and creative instinct. VIGT is more than a brand to us. It’s a continuation of something passed down through generations, shaped by place, by people, and by the strength of things made well.

Working together wasn’t a decision; it was something we naturally returned to.

What role does Grindavík play in your work and philosophy as designers and makers?

Our roots in Grindavík trace back to the 18th century. It’s where we grew up—surrounded by raw elements and endless space to imagine. Shaped by lava fields, the sea, and a deep sense of resourcefulness.

Grindavík is more than a place to us—it’s a way of living. Grounded, honest, and uncomplicated. It taught us to work with what we have, to trust ourselves, and to stay close to what matters.

The people around us have always believed in us. That trust continues to guide our work. In many ways, every design begins by returning home—looking inward, toward our roots.

The Mirrored Mask Stand was designed as both a ritual object and a sculptural form.

Each piece reflects VIGT’s belief in letting nature speak for itself.

"Created by a family-run workshop in Grindavík, the stand is shaped by a shared language of trust, instinct, and Icelandic tradition.

Has the recent volcanic activity in the region changed or deepened your perspective on the land and your work?

The recent volcanic activity was a reminder that nothing is permanent. Everything can shift in an instant. When we had to evacuate our hometown and leave our belongings behind—unsure if they’d be lost under lava—it brought up unexpected questions. What value do objects really hold? What does it mean to create when the physical things we make can disappear overnight? How do you keep making when you're unsure what truly matters?

Over time, we realized how much these things do mean. We missed them—not just for their function, but for the warmth they bring. They connect us to memory, to experience, to who we are.

Rediscovering purpose and passion felt grounding. Today, we continue doing what we love: designing and crafting furniture and objects that bring warmth and character into people’s lives.

How do natural Icelandic materials influence your aesthetic or design approach?

We’re drawn to simple, honest materials—wood, wool, stone. When possible, we use Icelandic ones—especially blágrýti, which appears in some of our pieces. We like to keep things natural and let the materials speak for themselves.

When Blue Lagoon Skincare approached you about this collaboration, what was your initial reaction?

Just beyond our mountain, Þorbjörn, lies the quiet world of the Blue Lagoon. We grew up just minutes from it—sledding down snowy hills with the lagoon in view, driving the road home and wondering, Are the clouds made here?

It’s a place full of memory. A part of our sense of home.

When telling people where we’re from, we’d often say: Grindavík—right by the Blue Lagoon. Bathing there has been a constant over the years. We’ve seen it evolve from something local to a place known around the world.

That’s why it felt so meaningful to mark the 30th anniversary of the Silica Mud Mask with something of our own: a piece designed in honor of a ritual we’ve known for most of our lives.

A collaboration rooted in proximity, memory, and deep respect for what it’s become.

There was an ease to it—for us, a way to contribute something tactile to a story that’s always felt like part of our own.

How did you approach designing a functional object like a mask stand that also feels elevated and beautiful?

When designing the mask stand, we wanted it to be more than functional. We wanted it to be beautiful in form—able to stand gracefully on a table and serve as a subtle piece of décor.

The piece has two purposes: one side is a stand to hold your mask, keeping it clean and accessible. The other side features a mirror—perfect for a makeup bag or as a small tray for jewelry or accessories.

By combining these functions, we created something both practical and elegant—a thoughtful everyday object designed to bring a little more care and beauty into daily rituals.

And hopefully, there will always be a mask ready in the stand, so you can easily grab it and go.

Can you share a bit about the material used for the mask stand and why you chose it?

The mask stand is made from mahogany hardwood. We chose it because it’s soft and pleasant to work with, allowing for smooth, refined details. At the same time, it’s strong and durable—perfect for a piece built to last.

Can you walk us through the design process?

Designing a new object always asks us to look in many directions at once—function, form, material, and execution. For this piece, we began by thinking about the ritual itself: how it’s used, where it lives, and what it might need to hold.

From there, it became a balance—between utility and aesthetics, simplicity and warmth. We chose materials that felt good in the hand, refined the shape until it felt both grounded and elegant, and made sure it could serve its purpose in a thoughtful way.

What does this collaboration symbolize for you—personally or professionally?

When Blue Lagoon Skincare invited us to create a design piece for the 30th anniversary of their iconic mask, it felt close—not just in distance, but in meaning. Two brands born from the same place. It felt like coming home—both literally and emotionally.

We’re honored that Blue Lagoon chose us for this collaboration—thank you for the trust.

This project is a reflection of place and the power of things made well, with a shared focus on sustainability.
